O Taste and See!- Reflections on Psalm 34

Psalms 34:1-22

I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

At all times. David had known what it meant to be victorious in wars. This time he had constantly been fleeing from King Saul’s rage. He knew what it meant to feel like God had forsaken him, but he says- at all times.

In sorrow or in happiness, victorious or apparently defeated, help me God to praise you at all times.

My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.

Boast- People boast of many things, David says he will boast in the Lors

O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.

Magnify. Like a magnifying glass, talk of all his wondrous love and care. Magnify His goodness.

 I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

Not most, not some, but all his fears. What an assurance, the Lord is able to deliver us from ALL our fears. What fears did David have at the time of writing this Psalm?- Constantly sought by Saul to be slain, wherever he fled, he was fearing for his life.

Do you have any fears? About the future, about your safety? Seek the Lord. He will hear you and deliver you from them all.

They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.

Ashamed. Have you ever been ashamed? Many times. You seek help from someone you trust but s/he says “I’m sorry I cant help you, I wish I could.” David says you will never feel this way when you come to God. I have many things in my life that make should make me ashamed, when I look at my past. But the promise is sure- joel 2:24-27- My people shall never be ashamed.

This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

Remember he is before King Ahimelech, pretending to be mad, he looks back at how ‘poor’ he was, a fugitive, and how constantly the Lord has protected him. He could only cry. The Lord answered his cry.

All troubles?- What is excluded from ALL? Have you any troubles? God is able to save you from ALL of them.

The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

God commissions His angels to save His chosen ones from calamity, to guard them from “the pestilence that walketh in darkness” and “the destruction that wasteth at noonday.” Psalm 91:6. Again and again have angels talked with men as a man speaketh with a friend, and led them to places of security. Again and again have the encouraging words of angels renewed the drooping spirits of the faithful and, carrying their minds above the things of earth, caused them to behold by faith the white robes, the crowns, the palm branches of victory, which overcomers will receive when they surround the great white throne.  {AA 153.2}

     It is the work of the angels to come close to the tried, the suffering, the tempted. They labor untiringly in behalf of those for whom Christ died. When sinners are led to give themselves to the Saviour, angels bear the tidings heavenward, and there is great rejoicing among the heavenly host. “Joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.” Luke 15:7. A report is borne to heaven of every successful effort on our part to dispel the darkness and to spread abroad the knowledge of Christ. As the deed is recounted before the Father, joy thrills through all the heavenly host.  {AA 153.3}

O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

Taste. The Lord invites us to try him. Just a little trust in me, then you will know the peace that there is in laying it all at his feet. Would you like to taste of his goodness? Taste and see. You may have heard of the testimonies, the stories of Moses, Elijah, but God would like to have an experience with you- O taste- personally, in your own experience.

 O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him. The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.

No want. We will never be brought to a place where that which we so much need, and the Lord sees it fit to give us, will be withheld. If I don’t have anything right now, the Lord knows I don’t need it. You shall not want any good thing.

How can young lions, in all their strength lack? As unimaginable as this is, those who trust in the Lord will not lack

Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD. What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

Like fatherly advice from one who has been there.

  1. 1.       Watch your words, they become your life
  2. 2.       A life of sin will only mean misery to anyone
  3. 3.       Seek peace, pursue it. Don’t tire until you find peace. This can only be at the feet of Christ.

The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.

If God is against you, who can be for you?

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit

Is your heart broken today? When we feel the Lord is far from us, those moments He is nearest. When you cant feel his hand, trust His heart.

Contrite- repentant spirit. Noone who comes to the Lord in repentance will ever be turned away.

Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken. Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate.  The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

God does not promise that we will not face the storms but he promises to be with us through the storms of life.
